I've been photographing headshots across the St. Louis metro area for years, and this city has some genuinely underrated locations for outdoor and environmental portraits. I've shot at dozens of spots -- some obvious, some that only locals would know -- and these are the ones I keep coming back to because they consistently deliver.
Forest Park
The obvious choice, and I'll never apologize for it. Forest Park offers massive variety in a single location: the Grand Basin for reflections and symmetry, the tree-lined paths for dappled light and depth, the Art Hill slope for elevated perspectives, and the various bridges and structures for architectural framing. Best time: golden hour (1 hour before sunset) at the Grand Basin. I shoot at Art Hill almost every month, and the light reflecting off the water creates a warm, dimensional glow that I genuinely can't replicate with any amount of studio equipment. There's a specific week in June when the sun drops directly behind the Art Museum and paints the entire basin in amber. I plan shoots around that window down to the minute.
Best for: Personal branding, executive portraits, editorial-style headshots
Parking: Free lots near the Art Museum and Muny

Laclede's Landing
This is one of my favorites for a certain kind of client. Brick buildings, cobblestone streets, and industrial texture. Laclede's Landing gives headshots an urban editorial feel without looking forced. I love the alleys between buildings -- they create natural light corridors that produce beautiful directional lighting in the afternoon, especially around 3-4 PM when the sun is angled just right between the buildings. The variety of surfaces (brick, metal, stone) adds visual interest to backgrounds without competing with the subject.
Best for: Entrepreneurs, creatives, professionals wanting a modern urban feel
Parking: Street and garage parking available
The Central West End
Maryland Plaza and the surrounding blocks are my go-to when a client wants a polished, upscale backdrop. The architecture reads as sophisticated without being industrial. Euclid Avenue's storefronts provide interesting depth for wider environmental portraits. The neighborhood is close to my studio in The Grove, making it easy to combine studio and outdoor looks in a single session. I do this combo constantly -- studio shots first, then we walk over for the outdoor set.
Best for: Healthcare professionals (WashU Medicine is next door), consultants, executives
Parking: Street parking on side streets; garages near Maryland Plaza
Lafayette Square
I have a soft spot for Lafayette Square. Victorian architecture, iron fencing, and a well-maintained park make it one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in the city. The park's fountain and walking paths work for traditional headshots, while the surrounding homes provide a distinctive residential backdrop for personal branding photography.
Best for: Real estate agents, small business owners, personal branding
Parking: Free street parking throughout the neighborhood

The Grove (My Neighborhood)
The Grove district along Manchester Avenue offers colorful murals, modern architecture, and a creative energy that shows in photographs. This is where my studio is, so I know every corner and light angle by heart. The mix of old and new buildings provides variety in a compact area.
Best for: Creative professionals, startup founders, personality-driven personal brands
Parking: Free lot at our studio

Tell me about your brand and I'll recommend the ideal St. Louis location for your session.
Get a QuoteCity Garden (Downtown)
A sculpture park in the middle of downtown St. Louis. The modern sculptures and landscaping create striking foreground and background elements. The water features add movement and reflection. The space is compact enough to get multiple looks without walking far.
Best for: Corporate executives, firm partners, anyone wanting a distinctive downtown backdrop
Parking: Garage parking on surrounding blocks
Missouri Botanical Garden
For certain clients, the Botanical Garden offers an unmatched combination of greenery, architecture, and water features. The Japanese Garden, Climatron, and formal gardens each offer a completely different atmosphere. Note: commercial photography requires a permit from the Garden.
Best for: Luxury brands, high-end personal branding, editorial
Parking: Large free lot on-site
Your Own Office
Don't overlook what's right in front of you. Your office lobby, conference room, or exterior can make a strong backdrop, especially for corporate headshots that should connect you to your workplace. I bring professional lighting to any office environment and can make even a plain conference room look polished. I've turned fluorescent-lit conference rooms in Clayton office parks into something that looks like a proper studio.
Best for: Corporate teams, law firms, healthcare organizations
Parking: Already there
My Studio
For controlled, consistent results, nothing beats a studio session. I offer multiple backdrop options (solid, gradient, textured) and professional lighting setups calibrated specifically for headshots. No weather variables, no permit issues, no parking hassles. The studio is the default choice for team headshots and anyone who wants the cleanest, most professional result.
