🎻 A Morning of Music at Piper Palm House
Live Session Recording with Project String Quartet
There are some spaces that seem made for music — and Piper Palm House, nestled in Tower Grove Park, is one of them. Built in 1878 by architect George I Barnett as the oldest greenhouse west of the Mississippi, it was conceived to overwinter tropical palm trees and orange trees. Its soaring windows, glass ceiling, marble floors, and surrounding lily ponds create a setting both historic and breathtaking.
This summer, Project String Quartet joined me in that cathedral of light, not for a live concert, but for an intimate recording session. The morning sun warmed the tile floors and our strings as we captured performance videos of songs cherished at weddings and events.
The Venue: Beauty & Sound in Perfect Harmony
Piper Palm House isn’t just beautiful, it’s acoustically exceptional. The greenhouse-style atrium produces a bright, natural resonance, making string instruments sing with clarity and warmth. Restored for events today, its brick-and-glass architecture echoes with delicate harmonics, offering a unique “live” quality that no sterile studio can match .
The Musicians: Top-Tier Talent & Versatility
Project String Quartet comprises elite musicians, each with impressive credentials - from Juilliard, Peabody, Northwestern, Yale, and more - who’ve performed with orchestras like the St. Louis and Chicago Symphonies . Their founder and violinist, Rebecca Chung, has studio and concert credits including Ariana Grande, Marvin Hamlisch, and film/TV scores such as House of Cards and Star Trek Discovery.
This quartet thrives on blending classical precision with contemporary flair, crafting custom arrangements that surprise and delight. Whether it’s reimagining Motown, pop, or film scores, they bring sophistication and heart to every piece.
What they Played
We chose arrangements that reflect both elegance and fun, and the musicians delivered beautifully:
Married Life (from Up) – tender nostalgia
Can’t Take My Eyes Off You – romance in full bloom
Blackbird – delicate emotion
Jumpin’, Jumpin’ – yes, strings can have fun too!
I Wish – bright, joyous energy
Isn’t She Lovely – contagious smiles
Signed, Sealed, Delivered – bold, Motown vibrancy
Each performance reflects PSQ’s expressive style and the synergy fostered in that luminous venue.
Where to Watch
More videos are available on Project String Quartet’s website and YouTube Channel, these clips showcase how strings transform familiar songs and enhance the ambiance.
But even if you’re simply looking for a peaceful, beautiful musical moment, these performances - captured in the unique acoustic environment of Piper Palm House - are something special.
